Message Stick Exhibition Opens in Honiara

On 14 October, the Australian High Commissioner Matt Anderson and the Acting Prime Minister, Hon Manasseh Maelanga, officially opened the touring art exhibition Message Stick: Indigenous Identity in Urban Australia at the King Solomon Hotel.

“I am pleased and proud to present this unique exhibition to a Solomon Islands audience, particularly in the lead-up to the 2012 Festival of Pacific Arts,” said Mr Anderson at the launch.

“Solomon Islands is only the second country outside of Australia to have received the exhibition, which will soon travel throughout the Pacific and Africa.

“Drawn from the active urban art scene in Australia, the exhibition features a selection of significant works by artists at the forefront of contemporary art in Australia.

“At their heart, the striking images hold the stories of Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures. These works make you think about what it means to be Indigenous in Australia today.

“The Australian Government’s long-running Indigenous visual arts touring program – and this latest exhibition in particular – demonstrates Australia’s commitment to embracing and celebrating the world’s oldest living culture,” said Mr Anderson.

The Message Stick exhibition will be on display in the King Solomon Hotel conference room from Saturday 15 October - Monday 24 October (excluding Sundays). Entrance is open to the public and free of charge.
