A group of youths and human rights advocates today celebrated Fiji Day with a difference by having a Fiji Day party at
the home of Human Rights Activist Shamima Ali in Tamavua where they shared their visions and views for a better Fiji.
Host Shamima Ali, “we should celebrate the resilience of the people of Fiji and the work that individuals are doing to
genuinely move the country forward, we all need to start loving and honouring our beloved country Fiji and Fiji Day is a
good time to start and as citizens of Fiji we must move forward on a common platform that embraces human rights,
democratic principles and the rule of law”.
These youths and advocates held up banners that had some of the lyrics of the national anthem that stand out like, “A
land of freedom, hope and glory”, “stand united we of Fiji”.
Advocate Tura Lewai also said, “we’re here to celebrate our country and to celebrate the people of this nation that
tirelessly work every day to move this country forward. We love Fiji and we just want to show people the love that we
have for our nation. I look around today and I see the faces of young people that are passionate and committed because
we are here not only for ourselves but for the future of this country. We will continue to strive for a free, fair and
just Fiji”.
Also present, advocate, Peter Waqavonovono said, “we all have a part to play in building a better Fiji as individuals,
we just need to start from somewhere, you don’t need big rallies, a march or even a big crown, you just need to start by
changing your mindset, and that in itself, is great and will make a difference as change comes from people and change
starts from citizens”.
They also held up Fiji flags and sang the national anthem and celebrated being a part and a future of this country.
