Two Australian Soldiers Wounded in Afghanistan
An Australian soldier serving with Mentoring Task Force – Three (MTF-3) in Afghanistan has returned to restricted duties after he sustained minor wounds when he fell down an embankment.
The soldier was enroute to conduct a dismounted patrol on Tuesday 27 September 2011.
In a separate incident a second soldier, also with MTF-3, fell down an embankment on Wednesday 28 September 2011 and is in a satisfactory condition after being aero-medically evacuated to a medical facility in Tarin Kot.
Director of Health, Headquarters Joint Operations Command, Group Captain Karen Leshinskas, said the two soldiers sustained minor wounds and were aero-medically evacuated to the Role 2 Medical Facility at Tarin Kot in Uruzgan Province.
“Both soldiers received immediate first aid before being evacuated by helicopter to Tarin Kot,” Group Captain Leshinskas said.
“The soldier wounded on 27 September was assessed as being in a satisfactory condition and has since returned to restricted duties.
“The soldier wounded the following day has also been medically assessed as being in a satisfactory condition, and is currently at the Medical Facility in Tarin Kot”.
Both of the soldiers’ next of kin have been notified.
The number of soldiers classified Wounded in Action in Afghanistan this year is now 36. To date, 201 soldiers having been wounded in Afghanistan since 2001.
Any Australian Defence Force member who is serving in war-like conditions and is hurt as a consequence of action against the enemy is classified as having been ‘wounded’.
