Paraguayan Refrigeration Firm Violates ILO Conventions

Brussels, 26 September 2011 (ITUC OnLine): The ITUC has joined with its affiliated organisations in Paraguay, the CNT and CUT-A, in strongly condemning Industria Paraguaya Frigorífica S.A (IPFSA) and the industrial refrigeration firm's president, Alba Pettengil Vacca, for violating the national constitution, the core conventions of the ILO, the national labour law and its accompanying legislation.

The ITUC has received reports from its affiliates that the union at the company SITRAIPFSA has denounced a series of grave irregularities and violations. The list of violations reported can be consulted in the ITUC letter of protest sent to the president of Paraguay and the company.

The ITUC, together with CUT-A and SITRAIPFSA, have called on President Fernando Lugo to take every action necessary to ensure that the company enter into dialogue with the workers, to bring a prompt end to these serious violations of the core ILO conventions ratified by Paraguay.

"These grave violations of the ILO conventions are totally unacceptable," said ITUC General Secretary Sharan Burrow. "These conventions guarantee workers' rights and are fundamental to the workings of a democracy with social justice."
