The Australian High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, His Excellency Matt Anderson, and the Minister for Police, National Security and Prison Services, Hon Clay Forau, are today co-chairing the annual Australia-Solomon Islands Defence Cooperation Talks in Honiara.
“Solomon Islands and Australia have a strong commitment to maritime security in the Pacific,” said High Commissioner Anderson.
“Solomon Islands and Australia have been cooperating on maritime security since 1988. Our longstanding cooperation reflects the excellent relationship between our two countries.
“Today’s talks are a valuable opportunity for us to discuss our shared interests. The talks reaffirm Australia’s commitment to the bilateral Defence Cooperation Program with Solomon Islands.
“The Defence Cooperation Program focuses on supporting the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) Maritime Unit’s maritime surveillance capability, as well as building the capacity of the RSIPF Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.
“The annual talks review the broad range of our current activities, and allow our two countries to plan for the future.”
The talks will be conducted between representatives from the Solomon Islands Government, Royal Solomon Islands Police Force and the Australian Department of Defence, including permanent Australian Defence Force staff posted to Solomon Islands.
A delegation from the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) will also be attending as observers.
