Experienced Mexican Official to Become Next UN Controller

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced today that he has <"http://www.un.org/News/Press/docs//2011/sga1306.doc.htm">appointed an experienced financial officer and manager from Mexico as the next Controller of the United Nations.

María Eugenia Casar will become Assistant Secretary-General and Controller in the Department of Management’s Office of Programme Planning, Budgets and Accounts.

Unveiling the appointment, Mr. Ban cited Ms. Casar’s “wide-ranging experience in senior financial management positions in both the private and public sectors, including academia, focusing on delivering results and overseeing major reforms leading to improved effectiveness.”

Ms. Casar has served as the chief financial officer of the UN World Food Programme (WFP) since 2009 and before that was the national treasurer of Mexico.

The author of several financial publications and a senior academic at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo of Mexico, Ms. Casar has also held senior positions in Mexico’s National Banking Commission and in various government ministries and entities.

Ms. Casar succeeds Jun Yamazaki, who has served as Controller since 2008, and Mr. Ban paid tribute to Mr. Yamazaki for his service, particularly “his strong sense of professionalism and commitment to the ideals of the Organization.”
