Indonesia Commander Asks Soldiers Not To Be Provoked By Killings in Papua

Several Indonesian military (TNI) soldiers have been killed during their deployment in the conflicting area of Papua. Nevertheless, TNI Chief Admiral Agus Suhartono called on TNI officers not to be provoked to commit human right abuses.

"Indeed several TNI officers have fallen, but let us emphasize patience in facing the circumstances. We do not want to be provoked by these incidents," said Suhartono on Thursday, 25 August after breaking his fast at TNI Headquarters in Cilangkap, East Jakarta.

Agus asked all TNI personnel to settle every matter according to the law. So far, the police in Papua have processed various criminal cases.

"So, if a shooting has occurred, we want to settle it in court," he said.
