During his visit to Solomon Islands on the weekend, Australian Parliamentary Secretary for Pacific Island Affairs
Richard Marles congratulated Australian Volunteers for the contribution that they have made to development in Solomon
Islands.
At a morning tea for the volunteers at the Australian High Commissioner’s Residence, Mr Marles said the Australian
Government was extremely proud of its volunteer program and the hard work and positive attitudes of Australian
Volunteers world-wide.
Mr Marles said Australia’s large volunteer program in Solomon Islands reflected the close friendship between our two
countries. He said the significant contribution that Australian Volunteers had made to a wide range of sectors in
Solomon Islands was greatly appreciated by the people and governments of both countries.
Forty-one Australian Volunteers are currently working in Solomon Islands under the Australian Volunteers for
International Development program (AVID). They work with local counterparts in areas including the Public Solicitor’s
Office, the Ministry of Health and Medical Services and the Commonwealth Youth Programme.
