NIGERIA:
Mosop Says Attack On The United Nations Is An Attack On The Symbol Of World Peace
Anyone fighting for human rights and freedoms cannot attack the United Nations. An attack on the United Nations is an attack on the symbol of world peace, human rights and freedoms, said Dr. Goodluck Diigbo, President /Spokesman of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People, MOSOP founded by nonviolent environmental activist, Late Ken Saro-Wiwa.
In a statement issued in The Hague, Dr. Diigbo said with the exception of the pursuit of peace, there is no cause the United Nations is more closely identified with than the cause of human rights and freedom for all. This, as is well known, explains why human dignity is boldly written into the Charter of the United Nations and human rights enjoy pre-eminence in the UN operating structures.
Dr. Diigbo said this in reaction to a car laden with explosives that reportedly rammed through two gates and blew up at the United Nations’ offices in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja on the 25th of August, 2011, and killed at least 16 people and shattered part of the concrete structure.
UN is the symbol of the global struggle of all peoples for fundamental human rights, the dignity and worth of every human being, big or small, poor or rich, man or woman; and to attack the UN is self-destruct, Dr. Diigbo stated.
Dr. Diigbo said he believes that the concept of a perfect world body is profusely reflective in an ideal UN, and its mistakes are mistakes of its member states.
This attack on the UN is despicable and I outrightly condemn it, said Dr. Diigbo. However, this incident should not diminish the determination of the UN to closely monitor the severity of political, economic and social crisis growing in Nigeria and the entire African continent, Diigbo remarked.
