The Home Secretary will hold talks with Metropolitan Police Acting Commissioner Tim Godwin and other officers.
Making a statement in central London this afternoon, Theresa May confirmed that there have been 215 arrests and 27
people charged in connection with rioting and looting in several London boroughs.
Brave officers
She said: 'The riots in Tottenham on Saturday night and the subsequent disturbances in other parts of London are totally
unacceptable. Once again I would like to pay tribute to the bravery of the police officers who put themselves in harm’s
way to protect the public, their property and local businesses.
'I would also like to thank Tim Godwin, the Acting Commissioner of the Met, and his senior officers, for the leadership
they have shown.
'I want to be clear: those responsible for the violence and looting will be made to face the consequences of their
actions. So far, there have been at least 215 arrests and 27 people have been charged. As officers take statements from
witnesses and examine CCTV evidence, further arrests will be made.
'Since Saturday night, Londoners have made clear that there are no excuses for violence, and I call on all members of
local communities to work constructively with the police to help them bring these criminals to justice.'
On the scene
Meanwhile, Home Office minister Lynne Featherstone and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg have today visited Tottenham and
Wood Green where rioting took place on Saturday.
After walking down part of Tottenham High Road and speaking with business owners, the ministers met local police chiefs,
councillors and religious leaders.
