Release of Sheikh Raed Salah a victory for Justice

UFree welcomes the release of Sheikh Raed Salah – A victory for justice

UFree has welcomed the full release of Sheikh Raed Salah, after almost three weeks in detention, following his initial arrest on immigration charges.

The Home Office Minister Theresa May, who claimed Sheikh Raed was on an alleged 'banned' list and should never have been allowed in the country, lost their appeal at the High Court to keep Sheikh Salah imprisoned due to the lack of evidence against him for 'unreasonable behaviour'.

UFree believes he was arrested following a campaign of lies and smears against him by the pro-Israeli right wing press in the UK. We understand that Sheikh Salah's lawyers will now take action against journalists who have spread unfounded rumours against the Sheikh to clear his name.

Mohammad Hamdan, the chair of UFree, a campaign defending the rights of Palestinian prisoners across Europe has called the release a victory for justice. 'Sheikh Raed Salah arrest has been widely condemned by all sections of Palestinian and Arab society – he is a widely respected figure across the Middle East. His detention by the UK Government made him Britain's first Palestinian political prisoner. His arrest has tarnished the reputation of its country's rule of law'.
