USA’s 1st Punjabi charter school opening in California

June 28, 2011 - First Punjabi charter school of USA will open in West Sacramento (California) in August next, according to reports.

Named Sacramento Valley Charter School, its mission includes promoting “a culture of strong social and family values” and it will provide a “rigorous” curriculum. It aims at meeting “academic, social and emotional needs” of the children.

Located on the property of Sikh Temple of Sacramento, it will provide free education from kindergarten to grade six (ultimately expanding to seventh and eighth grades), after school enrichment programs, Punjabi language education, school uniform, “more accountability”, homework assistance, free vegetarian lunch and refreshments, free transportation, etc., reports suggest.

Meanwhile, Indo-American statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, applauded efforts of charter school management and West Sacramento and surrounding area community for this wonderful project promoting Punjabi culture and language and strong social and family values among children.

Rajan Zed, who is Chairperson of Indo-American Leadership Confederation, further said that it was important to pass on our languages, culture and traditions to coming generations amidst so many distractions in the consumerist society and hoped that this charter school would prove effective in this direction.

Michael Ettner will reportedly be the principal of this publicly funded school approved by the Washington Unified School District, which will teach the culture and language of Punjab but is open to all. Dave Westin and Dr. Dayton Gilleland are Board President and Superintendent respectively of the District.
