Breaking: Gay Marriage Approved by N.Y. Senate 25 Jun 2011 Lawmakers voted late Friday to legalize same-sex marriage, making New York the largest state where gay and lesbian couples will be able to wed, and giving the national gay-rights movement new momentum from the state where it was born. The same-sex marriage bill was approved on a 33-to-29 vote, as 4 Republican state senators joined 29 Democrats in voting for the bill. The Senate galleries were so packed with supporters and opponents that the fire marshals closed them off. Five states currently permit same-sex marriage: Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont, as well as the District of Columbia.

One section would direct the military to set up a system of status hearings for prisoners it intends to hold in "long-term custody" in places like the prison at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, where about 1,700 men are currently being held without trial.

the Rule of Law Field Force in Afghanistan, will take up his
new post Oct. 1, the Pentagon said in a statement Thursday.

currently being questioned at a London police station over a
string of attacks claimed to be by the hacking group
LulzSec. He is alleged to have been in the process of

U.S. Senate investigates claim CIA tried to smear U-M prof 24 Jun 2011 The Senate Intelligence Committee is reviewing whether the CIA and the Bush White House may have tried to smear Juan Cole, a University of Michigan professor who writes a popular blog on Middle Eastern issues. "Depending on what we find, we may take further action," U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., who heads the committee, said in a statement. Cole had been critical, at times, of the Bush administration's handling of the Iraq war. A former CIA official, Glenn Carle, said that under former President [sic] George W. Bush, the White House ordered the CIA to dig up negative information about Cole's personal life in order to discredit his views.
U.S. House keeps Libya funding, fails to authorize 'mission' 25 Jun 2011 A resolution that bars most funding for the U.S. military mission in Libya failed in the U.S. House of Representatives on Friday, shortly after another measure authorizing the Libya mission suffered the same fate. The resolution, offered by Rep. Tom Rooney and supported by House Republicans, strikes current-year defense funding for the Libya mission except for search and rescue, intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, aerial refueling and operational planning. It failed the House on a 180-238 vote.
House rebukes Obama over Libya 24 Jun 2011 The U.S. House rebuked President Obama over Libya policy today, voting down a resolution that would granted him authority for the military operation against Moammar Gadhafi. Members are now considering a resolution that would cut off some funds for the military operation, in protest of Obama's refusal to seek congressional approval for the action. "The president has ignored the Constitution and the War Powers Resolution, but he cannot ignore a lack of funding," said Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Hypocrite-Fla., sponsor of the resolution. [Yes, Obama ignored the Constitution -- as he does daily w. the killer drone war crimes -- but GOPredators were *happy as clams* when Bush did it though, right?]
UK and France dismiss Italy's call for pause in Nato bombing of Libya --Italian foreign minister expresses concerns about civilian casualties 22 Jun 2011 Britain and France have both rejected a call by Italy for a pause in Nato's bombing of Libya to allow humanitarian aid to reach the civilian population. The Italian foreign minister, Franco Frattini, had suggested that Nato's credibility was at risk after a number of civilian casualties in air raids, but his comments were given short shrift in London and Paris, where both governments instead urged an intensification of pressure on Muammar Gaddafi amid signs that allied air attacks are moving into a new phase in western Libya. Nato also said that the operations would go on.
Arab League chief questions NATO tactics in Libya 23 Jun 2011 The Arab League leader who played a central role in securing Arab support for NATO airstrikes in Libya said he is having second thoughts about the action. Veteran Egyptian diplomat Amr Moussa said the bombing mission may not be working and a political solution should be found, The Guardian reported. Moussa told the newspaper in an interview in Brussels that he no longer believes the NATO mission will produce a breakthrough and sweep strongman Moammar Gadhafi from power.
40 killed as 4 blasts rock Baghdad
24 Jun 2011 Four explosions in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad,
two of them at a popular market, have killed at least 40
people and wounded another 100. "Explosives loaded in three
shopping carts killed 21 people and wounded 107 at the Shurt
al-Raba market," AFP quoted an interior ministry official as
saying on Thursday. Moreover, one of the bombs reportedly
targeted a Shia mosque near the market. The official added
that the attack happened at 6:45 p.m. (15:45 GMT) when the
area was crowded with shoppers.
US-led soldier killed in Afghanistan
23 Jun 2011 Another US-led soldier has been killed in
eastern Afghanistan, a day after US President Barack Obama

from the war-ravaged country. NATO's international Security
Assistance Force (ISAF) said in a statement on Thursday that
militants killed a US-led soldier in the strife-torn Asian
country on Wednesday.

Nasrallah said on Friday the group had captured three spies
among its members, two of whom were recruited by the U.S.
Central Intelligence Agency. The spies, one of whom was
recruited five months ago, did not pose a serious threat to
the movement or its military capabilities, he said.
Nasrallah said the CIA agents who hired the spies had
diplomatic protection from the U.S. embassy in
Beirut.
US steps ups pressure on Gaza flotilla
activists --Warnings came after 36 Americans said will
sail U.S.-flagged vessel in flotilla 24 Jun 2011 The
Obama regime on Friday stepped up pressure on American
activists planning to challenge Israel's sea blockade of the
Gaza Strip, formally warning they face action from Israeli
authorities and may be violating U.S. law. The warning was
the latest in a series from the State Department this week
urging Americans not to join a flotilla planned to
commemorate a similar effort to challenge the blockade last
year.
Nuclear experts killed in Russia plane crash
helped design Iran facility --No official investigation
of foul play has been opened, though Iranian nuclear experts
have in the past been involved in similar accidents. 23
Jun 2011 The five nuclear experts killed in a plane crash in northern Russia earlier
this week had assisted in the design of an Iranian atomic
facility, security sources in Russia said on Thursday. The
five Russian experts were among the 44 passengers killed
when the Tupolev-134 plane broke up and caught fire on
landing outside the northern city of Petrozavodsk on Monday.
The five were employed at the Hydropress factory, a member
of Russia's state nuclear corporation, and one of the main
companies to contract for the Bushehr construction.
Officials Say Two Planned Armed Attack in
Seattle 24 Jun 2011 Federal law enforcement
officials have arrested two men who they say planned to
attack a military processing center here using machine guns
and grenades. The men -- Abu Khalid Abdul-Latif, also known
as Joseph A. Davis, of Seattle, and Walli Mujahidh, also
known as Frederick Domingue Jr., of Los Angeles -- were
arrested late Wednesday and charged with conspiracy to
murder federal officers and employees, conspiracy to use
weapons of mass destruction and several firearms-related
charges. The processing center, called the Military Entrance
Processing Station, is used to help process new
enlistees.

man was one of two arrested late Wednesday on suspicion of
planning to blow up a military recruiting station on East
Marginal Way, the U.S. Justice Department reports. Two men were arrested late last

and firearms related charges. The complaint alleges that Abu
Khalid Abdul-Latif, aka Joseph Anthony Davis, of Seattle,

Angeles, took possession of machine guns that they purchased
and planned to use in an attack on the Military Entrance
Processing Station (MEPS) located on East Marginal Way,
Seattle.

federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission will arrive in
Nebraska Sunday to monitor preparations against Missouri
River flooding at two Nebraska nuclear power plants,
officials said Friday. NRC Chair Gregory Jaczko will visit
the Cooper Nuclear Station south of Omaha Sunday and the

standing on the site of the 478-megawatt Fort Calhoun plant,
operated by the Omaha Public Power District, the NRC said
Wednesday.

Ministry has set radiation limits for swimming areas in
seas, lakes and rivers across the country in the wake of the
nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant, a
ministry guideline showed Thursday. In the guideline

water contains 50 becquerels or less of radioactive cesium
per liter and 30 becquerels or less of radioactive
iodine.
Huge quake triggers tsunami alert in Alaskan
islands 24 Jun 2011 A powerful 7.3-magnitude
earthquake shook Alaska's Aleutian Islands late Thursday,
triggering a tsunami warning that sent people heading for
high ground before the alert was canceled. The earthquake
struck 80 miles (130 kilometers) northeast of the seafood
port of Dutch Harbor, home to some 4,400 people. The temblor
struck at 7:10 pm local time (0300 GMT Friday), triggering a
tsunami warning from the West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning
Center (WCATWC).
Tsunami warning for Alaska after 7.4
quake 24 Jun 2011 The U.S. Geological Survey says a
magnitude 7.4 earthquake has been recorded in the Pacific
Ocean off Alaska's remote Aleutian Islands. The Alaska
Tsunami Warning Center says a tsunami warning has been
posted for certain coastal areas of Alaska. That warning
covers an area from 80 miles northeast of Dutch Harbor to
about 125 miles west of Adak. The quake struck Thursday
evening. [HAARP is a busy little bee!]
Isolated measles outbreak has Indiana
officials on alert 23 Jun 2011 Health officials in
Indiana were on alert on Thursday after five measles cases
were confirmed in Noble County in the northeastern part of
the state. State Health Commissioner Dr. Gregory Larkin said
his department had dispatched workers to seven nearby
counties in northern Indiana to identify any additional
cases of the highly contagious disease and to prevent its
spread. The workers have also been given additional doses of
the measles vaccine.
Sanders, Welch applaud release of oil reserves 23 Jun 2011 A decision by the White House to release 30 million barrels of oil from the country's strategic petroleum reserve is drawing high praise from Vermont's congressional delegation. The Obama administration made the announcement Thursday, saying it was part of a broader plan to address elevated oil prices that was agreed to by the International Energy Agency. The 30 million barrels being reduced from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve accounts for half of the 60 million barrels the international community plans to release over a 30-day period.
N.J. Assembly Approves Bill Hiking Benefits
Costs for Workers 24 Jun 2011 The New Jersey
Assembly has passed landmark employee benefits legislation
requiring public workers to pay sharply more for pension and
health benefits. The divisive bill passed 46-32 Thursday
with support from all Republicans who were present and a
smattering of Democrats. The Senate approved the bill
Monday. Republican Gov. Chris Christie is expected to
quickly sign it.
NJ Assembly ends collective bargaining
rights for public workers --Approves bills requiring
public workers to pay more for health benefits and
pensions 24 Jun 2011 Assembly members Thursday night
approved a package of changes cuts to health care and
retirement benefits for public workers despite a last-ditch
but doomed protest by those workers and union heads.
Thirty-two members voted against the proposal, but they were
outnumbered by the 46 Assembly members who voted in favor,
facing loud boos from watching union members. As the final
legislative step cleared the way for Gov. Chris Christie to
sign the bills as soon as Thursday night, union
leadership damned what they called the betrayal of their
membership by the Democratic majority in both
houses.
New Law in Kansas Seen as a Threat to
Abortions 25 Jun 2011 One in a series of abortion
limits approved in Kansas since Republicans took full
control of the state government this year -- a new license
law -- is raising uncertainty about the future of all
abortion providers in the state. Abortion rights supporters,
here and nationally, say the rules, which take effect next
week, are onerous, have been rushed into place too rapidly
and are actually aimed at ending abortion services at the
only three places in the state now providing them, perhaps
as early as Friday. "These requirements range from the
impossible to the absurd," said Nancy Northup, president of
the Center for Reproductive Rights. "They're not designed to
protect patient safety; they’re designed to shut down
abortion providers."
Water filling 2,500 homes in Minot as river
rises 24 Jun 2011 The Souris River's full weight hit
Minot on Friday, swamping an estimated 2,500 homes as it
soared nearly 4 feet in less than a day and overwhelmed the
city's levees. City officials said they expected more than
4,000 homes to be flooded by day's end. More than a quarter
of the city's 40,000 residents evacuated earlier this week,
packing any belongings they hoped to save into cars, trucks
and trailers. Fed by heavy rains upstream and dam releases
that have accelerated in recent days, the Souris surged past
a 130-year-old record Friday and kept going.
