"It is impossible that anything so natural, so necessary, and so universal as death, should ever have been designed by Providence as an evil to mankind."~~Jonathan Swift (1667 - 1745)
I think the fascination with doomsday starts with death (or the lack of not knowing what happens afterwards). You see, for as long as time and events have been recorded, one thing remains constant; we don't know what happens after we die. Some religions have tried to give us ideas and hope; however, no one true answer has stood the test of time.
With western civilization, I think it's more a fear factor of no salvation before the end. People want to have some kind of idea when the end will come. Maybe they're worried that they have strayed so far from their beliefs -- from their humanity -- that if they knew when it will all come to an end, they would have enough time to repent and save their souls? Perhaps so. Although, in reality -- you're supposed to know the difference between right and wrong and live every day righteously, that way you have no regrets or worries when the time comes.
Having said that, when it comes to being prepared for possible disasters, most people mistakenly take the "wait and see" stance and then wonder why the response is feeble at best and pathetic at the least. Remember Katrina? Can you imagine what would happen if the whole U.S. electrical grid went down for any length of time? Do you think the government is prepared? Think again.
Not that long ago, the Gulf Oil Spill served as a lesson that proves that Profits are King, and pre-planning will never happen in today's Greedy Business World. Companies would much rather cry "This is unprecedented" after the fact. BP could have used pre-planning to avoid the horrible consequences in the Gulf, but they are too greedy and don't care. Well, our government takes the same approach as most greedy corporations. Because, after all, the corporations own them (the politicians) lock, stock and barrel. Bottom line, no realistic preplanned safety precautions are in place. And even if they started today, it is too late; it would not be completed in time to stop the inevitable.
Our interconnected world by way of electronics IS totally at risk to the Sun's powerful storms. The best they can do is conduct massive power shut-downs and hope for the best. Still going to wait for the government to save you? Good luck, you will be ignored because the cost of preparation will reduce dividends, profits and bonuses. Besides, don't you know -- most of us are considered useless eaters and "expendable"?
In fact, many pundits and a few scientific simpletons are gushing that a "bad winter storm" is worse than a bad solar storm. This is entirely bogus after considering the amount of Gamma and Neutron radiation that could hit your body as a result of a bad solar storm. IF our body receives the maximum lifespan amount of radiation, then our physical well-being is greatly compromised and we might not even be aware of it. We would feel like we came down with a sudden head cold as our physical body attempts to heal the wide scale amount of genetic damage. Those without an adequate immune system would get radiation sickness and NOT recover.
The reactor meltdown at Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant -- the massive release of radiation -- is further proof that Governments do not protect their people.
You ain't seen nothing yet. This is no laughing matter. As a result of the Mayan culture's remarkable calendar skills and the science of time cycles which no earthly science at this time has unraveled, a great many native cultures state that humanity on earth is reaching a crossroads at the time of the next great Mayan cycle of time. The crossroads those native cultures list are a continued rise to prosperity or a swift demise and utter disaster.
Is this the dawn of a new age?
Regardless, this is nothing to laugh about for any sane, intelligent and open-minded individual. It could be as trivial as a coin toss -- a new beginning of enlightened awareness? Or maybe solar storms, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or the insanity of greed sparking off WWIII that drags the world into a swift outburst of utter disaster. Anything is possible...

On a final note: Yes, be prepared, but do not live in fear. This is woefully important as well -- instead of worrying about the end, live your life the way it is intended to be lived; do right by your fellow man, and insure that you are right with your spiritual self! Remember this too -- be kind, be compassionate and love one another. Because -- all things considered -- all we really have in this world is each other.
