Kylie Kwong supports
Oxfam’s 2011 ‘Stop Hunger’ Appeal
Acclaimed
chef, author and Oxfam Ambassador Kylie Kwong is encouraging
all Australians to get behind Oxfam Australia’s new
‘Stop Hunger’ Appeal launched today.
With one in
seven people in the world going hungry each day, the new
appeal highlights the urgency to donate and ensure people in
poor countries have enough to eat.
“Many poor communities around the world are at severe risk of hunger and malnutrition because they do not have access to food and the diverse range of produce that we take for granted in Australia.
“As a chef I am passionate about food, I care deeply about helping those who don’t have enough to eat. I encourage you to donate to the Stop Hunger Appeal.
“Together we can help families grow and cook fresh, healthy meals and work their way out of poverty,” Ms Kwong said.
This year’s appeal profiles the work Oxfam Australia is doing to help people overcome hunger in Mozambique.
Faced with prolonged drought and a 30% increases in costs for food essentials – many Mozambique communities are suffering from extreme hunger. Right now almost half of children aged under five in Mozambique are affected by malnutrition.
Oxfam Australia is supporting women and men in Mozambique to grow more food by giving them drought-tolerant seeds such as pineapples and farming education so they can provide food for their families. Pineapples are rich in vitamins B1, B2, B6 and C and help children eat a healthy balanced diet. Farmers can also sell fruit and vegetables at their local markets to generate an income.
Pineapple is a key ingredient in Kylie Kwong’s recipe that she is providing to supporters of the appeal.
Oxfam Australia Executive Director Andrew Hewett said he
hoped Australians would get behind the Stop Hunger Appeal
which aims to raise $3 million to help people overcome
hunger.
“We urge Australians to support Oxfam’s stop
hunger appeal this year. With rising food prices, the
public’s financial support for our regular stop hunger
appeal is even more vital than ever,” Mr Hewett said.
Supporters of the appeal can access a new recipe from Kylie Kwong and one from her book 'Simple Chinese Cooking’ (Penguin Group) at www.oxfam.org.au/pineapples.
