ITF: Egypt no-strike decree 'would be betrayal of democratic struggle'

The ITF has said that a reported plan to criminalise strikes in Egypt would be a betrayal of the country’s recent struggle which overthrew the Mubarak government.

Supporting a call from the ITUC (International Trade Union Confederation) to the Egyptian Prime Minister (see below), ITF general secretary David Cockroft said: “Egyptian workers played a crucial role in the fight for democracy. To try and deny them their basic democratic right to lawful industrial action would be a travesty of what the people of Egypt fought for and won. This draft plan must be repudiated immediately by the government.”
