Kolombangara Community Bands Together to Provide Kids with Education
Kaza community in Kolombangara is a very special place. The people recognised the need for a community high school for their children and have banded together to make it happen.
Australian Deputy High Commissioner, Ms Alison Duncan, was delighted to witness this community spirit during a visit to Kaza last week to hand over an Australian High Commission Direct Aid Program donation of building materials to erect a new boy’s dormitory for the school.
Currently the 39 boys who attend the school are living in a small leaf house. The new dormitory will be a large sturdy building with good ventilation and roofing iron, to match the new dormitory that has just been finished for the girls.

The land upon which the school is built was donated by a local family, who moved to another site so that the community would have a place to build its school. Ms Duncan said “It is so wonderful and humbling to learn about the generosity and sacrifice made by this family for the betterment of their people. This kind of community spirit sets an example for people everywhere”.
The children and youths of Kaza community welcomed Ms Duncan with a wonderful song, thanking her for Australia’s assistance. Ms Duncan also donated some reading and sports materials to the school Principal, Mr Clive Palmer, who warmly welcomed her visit and Australia’s help in enabling the school to better look after its students.
The Australian High Commission’s Direct Aid Program supports small community-based projects throughout Solomon Islands. Applications are available from the High Commission office in Honiara.
