Bode George: Celebrating Graft, A National Shame, Lawyer Tells Obasanjo PDP
PORT HARCOURT lawyer, Mr. Chuks Uguru, has strongly frowned at President Goodluck Jonathan, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for celebrating the release of Chief Olabode George, from proison for fraud. Uguru, who was speaking in a telephone chat with AkanimoReports late on Monday night, was also not happy with President Jonathan, for sending a ''high powered delegation'' to welcome George who is a big wig of the PDP in the South-West zone back from jail. The lawyer said for Obasanjo being physically present at the ''show of shame'', the former president, according to him, has shown that his administration's anti-corruption war was truly selective and for political purpose.
Continuing, he said, ''it is a national shame for a leader of Obasanjo status, the Presidency under Jonathan's watch, and the PDP to join others in celebrating fraud. Olabode George is a convicted felon who was not jailed for traffic offence, but fopr fraud''. Adding, he said, ''the celebrated release of Olabode George, an ex-jail bird, has once again demonstrated how morally debased those who call the shots in this country are''. Olabode George also known as “Lagos Boy”, served as board Chairman of the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA). He was convicted on Monday, October 26, 2009, for fraud and abuse of office, by a Lagos High Court. Eye witnesses say Olabode
George who was overjoyed at the rousing thanksgiving service held in his honour by PDP, at the Cathedral Church, Marina, said, ''Out there in the prison, you are totally blanked out; you don’t know what is going on, so, I want to thank you guys, thank all Nigerians with malice to nobody and love for all. We will make our country envy to other nations. ''I have collected the certificate from the University Life and I thank God I just graduated from the University of Life”. Dignitaries who graced the occasion includes, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, Ogun state Governor, Musiliu Obanikoro, Nigerian Ambassador to Ghana, , Ayodele Fayose former Governor of Ekiti state, Adetokunbo Kayode, minister of defense, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, Mr. John Odey and several other people. President Jonathan sent a high powered delegation to welcome the “Lagos Boy”. While recounting his experience in prison, he described it as very educative, adding, ''i will share the experience with you guys later''.
