Fijians in Christchurch are safe

Ministry Of Information

Media Release

Friday, February 25th 2011, No: 494/MOI) Fijians Safe in Christchurch

Fijians in Christchurch are safe says the Fiji High Commission in Wellington.

And reports of loss of life reported by some media organisations are untrue and baseless.

First Secretary Ms Mere Tora has been in regular contact with community leaders, who have established that while some properties were damaged there is no injury or loss of life.

“The death of eight Fijians as reported in a Fiji news site yesterday is false as verified by the Wellington Hospital authorities,” she said.

On the welfare of Fijians in Christchurch, she said the New Zealand Government has committed a substantial amount of resources to the rescue and recovery operations and Fijians as Canterbrians were assured of assistance.

She has also been told by members of the community that they were looking out for one another and there was a real sense of care and comradeship amongst them
