ITF comment on Libya

ITF comment on Libya

Commenting on the situation in Libya, ITF general secretary David Cockroft said: “It appears that Colonel Gaddafi’s going is now a matter of when rather than if. The only question is whether he and his associates will continue to unleash more violence against thier own people in a futile attempt to cling to power.”

“We urge him to call off the awful attacks being mounted by the army and air force against unarmed protestors and to go, and go now.”

He concluded: “The ITF commends the initiative by the International Trade Union Confederation to try and persuade the Libyan government to stop the bloodshed (www.ituc-csi.org/ituc-urges-gaddafi-to-end-massacre.html); and we would encourage everyone to sign up to it – even if we hope that the speed of events will soon make any appeals addressed to those currently in power in the country redundant.
