Rally outside Indonesian Consulate -Sydney
Tuesday 22 February
The West Papuan community in Australia
and their supporters will hold
a peaceful rally outside
the Indonesian Consulate in Sydney to call for the release
of all West Papuan Political Prisoners.
There are
approximately 100 West Papuans political prisoners in
Indonesian jails including Filep Karma who was arrested in
December 2004, and charged with makar (rebellion). In May
2005, a court sentenced Filep Karma to 15 years
in prison
on charges of treason. Amnesty International considers Filep
Karma to be a prisoner of conscience who has been detained
solely for the peaceful exercise of his right to freedom of
expression.
The rally is calling on the Indonesian Government to release all West Papuan political prisoners arrested for simply taking part in rallies which is their democratic right.
