EU sets weak fuel efficiency law for vans

Brussels, 15 February 2011 -A new fuel efficiency law for vans is set to be rubber stamped by the European Parliament today. If approved, van manufacturers will have to reduce emissions to 175 grams CO2 per kilometre by 2017 and 147g by 2020. Average emissions from new vans sold in Europe were 203g CO2/km in 2007.

Greenpeace EU transport campaigner Franziska Achterberg said: “These standards will do little to curb the continuous rise in emissions from vans, even though the necessary technology is available and used in a number of models today.

“Last decade had nine of the ten hottest years on record. The van sector needs to pull its weight if we are to steer clear of dangerous climate change. When these standards are reviewed in 2012, the EU should up the pace of progress to benefit the climate and consumers alike.”
