Joint Efforts to Improve Fiji Living Standards

Joint Efforts to Improve Living Standards

(Friday, January 28th, 2011, No:0226/MOI)

The Ministry of Local Government, Housing, Urban Development and Environment is working with the People’s Community Network (PCN) to improve living standards for people living in squatter settlements.

Director for Housing, Mr Kolinio Bola says the ministry is working closely with PCN for the Lagilagi project in Jittu Estate.

He said the Government’s contribution in this project was the infrastructure and the PCN steps in for the savings scheme and registration for eligible tenants.

“The government’s contribution to this project is the provision of infrastructure in terms of construction of roads, laying of water pipes and electricity reticulation within the subdivision,” Mr Bola said.

“Once the physical part is done than PCN will come in and finish the saving works. Then the next stage will be registration of titles to potential tenants.”

Mr Bola is optimistic the joint initiative between the ministry and PCN will eventually improve lives of peoples in squatter settlements.

He said the PCN had identified important issues and challenges to address and build on to contribute effectively to housing of the poor.
