ADFIS investigation into illicit substances
On 10 December 2010, the Australian Defence Force Investigative Service (ADFIS), acting on information received,
commenced an investigation into the alleged supply and use of illicit substances at a Naval base in Australia.
As a result of this investigation, ADFIS searched a number of premises in cooperation with civilian Police. A range of
substances and other items were seized and a number of Defence personnel were tested for prohibited substance use.
It is too early in the investigation to confirm the nature of all of the substances seized to date, though it can be
confirmed that steroids were found.
ADFIS investigations remain ongoing and it would be inappropriate for Defence to provide further comment until these
investigations are completed.
Defence has a zero tolerance policy regarding the use of illicit substances by personnel, and takes these matters very
seriously.
All ADF personnel are subject to random and targeted drug testing and must undertake annual alcohol and drug awareness
training which provides information in relation to the dangers of substance abuse.
