UN Chief Appoints Special Advisor On Human Security

New York, Dec 10 2010 6:10PM

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today appointed Yukio Takasu of Japan as his special advisor on human security, following a General Assembly <"http://www.un.org/Docs/journal/asp/ws.asp?m=a/res/64/291">resolution in July that recognized the need to continue discussions on the issue.

Mr. Takasu has played a pivotal role in advancing a greater understanding on the notion of human security both within the United Nations and outside for more than 10 years. In 2006, he initiated the formation of the Friends of Human Security (FHS), an informal network.

Mr. Ban requested Mr. Takasu, in his new capacity as Special Advisor, to conduct close consultations with Member States, UN system organizations and other stakeholders to facilitate the achievement of a common understanding on the notion of human security.

He will coordinate closely with the Human Security Unit in the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Mr. Takasu, who most recently served as Japan’s Ambassador to the UN, was the Assistant Secretary-General and Controller of the UN from 1993 to 1997, during which he was responsible for budget and financial management of the world body, including peacekeeping operations.
