Documentary on SASR Selection to Air Tonight

Published: Tue 7 Dec 2010 04:54 PM
SAS – The Search for Warriors, a documentary about the 2010 Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) selection course, will air for the first time tonight.
The two part documentary premiering tonight and on December 14 at 8.30pm on SBS, is an expose of the quest to be selected to join the ranks of Australia’s elite SASR.
Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, Warren Snowdon said the documentary crew attended every day of the selection course.
“This is a rare insight into the raw intensity of the challenges faced by hopeful SASR candidates. Not since the documentary Battle for the Golden Road in 1985 has SASR allowed their selection process to be filmed by anyone outside of the Australian Defence Force.
“The Battle for the Golden Road was a source of inspiration for a generation of servicemen contemplating and preparing for SASR selection over the years, and we hope tonight’s documentary will give people who aspire to be in the SASR a contemporary look at the selection process,” Mr Snowdon said.
Selection candidate Trooper W, who must remain anonymous for security reasons, finished the course and was selected for reinforcement training to become a member of the SASR.
“I think my family will be a little surprised when they see me in the program. It was hard to explain the selection process to them, so this documentary will hopefully show some of this process and give them a better understanding of selection,” he said.
While the SASR selection process aims to find the best of the best from among ADF ranks, the ADF offers an enormous range of opportunities with more than 200 exciting jobs on offer in the Navy, Army and Air Force.
Joining Australia’s Defence Force is arguably the most important, life changing decision anyone can make – but it’s more than just a job.
Every member of the ADF has made a commitment to serve their country and support its long term interests.
