Savo/Russell Islands Copra Project Receives Taiwanese Assistance
The Republic of China (Taiwan) today has released $SBD 100,000 funding towards copra projects for people on the Islands of Savo and Russells in Central Province.
ROC Ambassador George Chan formally released the funds to Prime Minister Danny during a brief ceremony at the Prime Minister’s Office in Honiara.
Prime Minister Philip told Ambassador Chan that Savo and Russell Islands have lost many good chances for development in their shares due to the ethnic tensions in the country.
Solomon Islands government has no hesitation to give its endorsement when rural people of the two Islands through the Member of Parliament for Ngella, Hon. Mark Kemakeza, minister for Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification asked government to support such development project to enhance their livelihood.
Savo and Russell Islands has a strong potential for copra production. The communities have been producing high quality copra than any other islands in Solomon Islands for many years.
The project would strengthen the economic powerhouse of rural people who have the capacity to yield direct benefit to the communities through their copra production. And this project is an important opportunity for the Savo/Russell Islands people to earn income to meet their daily needs.
Ambassador George Chan is pleased that the government of ROC (Taiwan) is able to support Solomon Islands to implement its rural policy to boost rural advancement in the Solomon Islands. The government of ROC (Taiwan) has committed itself to cooperate with the NCRA government to enhance the livelihood of rural people of Solomon Islands.
Prime Minister Hon. Danny Philip once again expressed his sincere appreciation to the People and Government of the ROC (Taiwan) for the increasing assistance.
