Turkish crew of Most Sky ship detained in Birkenhead

25 November 2010

Press alert:Returning Turkish crew of Most Sky ship detained in Birkenhead arrested today on arrival home

The ITF, which helped crew members of the ship Most Sky (detained in Birkenhead as unfit to go to sea) to secure their owed wages and tickets home reports that the crew were today arrested on arrival at Istanbul airport at around 17:00 local time.

It is unclear on what charge they were detained; there is a disturbing possibility that the ship owner may have made a complaint against them, but this is unconfirmed. The ITF has arranged legal assistance via one of its Turkish member unions, which has organised a lawyer for the men, but so far access has been blocked to them; it is hoped that the lawyer will be able to see them tomorrow.

The ITF regrets that it has no further information at this time.
