Elizabeth Cross Winner died in Cultural Revolution terror
The New Zealand family of a British Soldier killed in Hong Kong by a terrorist bomb will gather in Auckland tomorrow to receive the Elizabeth Cross.
Sergeant Colin Workman, a bomb disposal expert, was posted to Hong Kong at the height of the 1967 terror when over 51 people died in the former British Colony.
Over 8,000 home made bombs were planted around the city as Maoist activists, inspired by the Cultural Revolution across the border in China, tried to confront the British Government.
Sergeant Workman was returning to his base when he discovered a bomb marked by a flag on Lion Rock. When he tried to defuse the bomb ,it exploded and Workman was killed.
His wife Maureen, who remarried ,and his children now live in New Zealand Many of his family will be present at tomorrow’s medal ceremony at 10 .30 a.m. at the British Consulate-General's offices in Auckland.
The Elizabeth Cross will be presented to Sergeant Workman’s family by the British High Commissioner, Mrs Vicki Treadell.
