PM Receives Education Funds From ROC

Prime Minister Danny Philip has today received the final portion of the Funding Support for the 2010 Solomon Islands Government Training and Education Award from the Ambassador of ROC (Taiwan) HE George Chan.

The handing over of the SBD$6.7 million was also witnessed by the Minister for Education Hon Dick Ha’amori.

During the handover, the Prime Minister told Ambassador Chan that the fund will assist the Solomon Islands Government in supporting more than 600 Solomon Islands students to undertake various study programs at universities and institutions in Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Samoa, SICHE and USP Centre in Honiara by covering their second semester tuition fees and other allowances.

Ambassador Chan said education is the foundation of all developments and growths for any nation, therefore he would expect all students who benefitted from the funding to return home after the completion of their studies and serve the country and the people of Solomon Islands.

ROC (Taiwan) Government has continued to provide SBD$16.7M annual provisions to this education project.

In April 2010, ROC released the first tranche of the funding that totaled SBD$10M.

Prime Minister Danny Philip sincerely appreciated ROC’s ongoing funding support towards the Solomon Islands education sector at the tertiary level and Basic Free Education.
