Baby Food Activists Face Court
26 October 2010, Sydney: Six Greenpeace activists and mums will appear in North Sydney Local Court tomorrow on charges relating to last month’s contaminated baby formula protests.
The women were arrested at Woolworths Neutral Bay after labelling genetically modified baby formula, S-26 Soy, to give parents their right to know what’s in their children’s food. A simultaneous protest took place in Melbourne at Coles Fitzroy, where no arrests were made.
“It’s outrageous that these women had to get arrested and charged just to find out what’s in their kids food. The genetically modified organisms that have been repeatedly found in S-26 Soy have never been proven safe for human consumption. They carry no GM label, so parents have no idea they are feeding GM to their babies,” said Ms Kelly.
“The women appearing in court - like so many other parents - demand the right to know what’s in the food they give their children. The Australian Government needs to act to protect Australian children. It’s time the Government got real about GM labelling, giving parents the right to know and the right to choose. In the meantime, supermarkets must take the product off the shelves until it’s properly labelled,” Ms Kelly said.
