Hindus Put Stamp Of Approval On Brand-Perry India Wedding Ceremony

Hindus have put stamp of authenticity on Russell Brand and Katy Perry marriage in Rajasthan (India) on October 23, adding that most, if not all, Hindu wedding traditions were reportedly followed.

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that in Hinduism, vivah (marriage) was the most important samskar (sacrament). With this samskar, English actor-comedian Brand and American musician Perry had now entered into grihasth-ashram (householder phase), where they could attend to the goals of dharma (duty). In Hinduism, married couple was looked as a complete module for worship and participation in cultural/social acts.

Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, further said that reports suggested that Brand-Perry started the wedding ceremony in a jungle camp adjoining Ranthambhore National Park, conducted by a pandit (Hindu priest), with invoking Lord Ganesh (elephant headed god of good luck and remover of obstacles). A traditional mandap (pavilion) was erected where they took seven circumambulations of the sacred sacrificial fire tied to each other with dupatta (scarf) amidst recitation of Sanskrit mantras. Brand entered the venue on a decorated horse accompanied by family and friends in traditional barat procession amidst sounds of Indian musical instruments and touched the feet of Perry’s parents for blessings. Perry participated in mehndi ceremony on October 22 night when some of her body parts were decorated with intricate mehndi (myrtle paste) designs and women participants were also seen with mehndi painted hands. Both Brand and Perry wore traditional Hindu dresses, with Perry sporting a sari.

Rajan Zed, however, added that little more piety would still had helped even more.

Perry had been reportedly spotted wearing nath (traditional bridal nose ring which is removed by groom on wedding night) before the wedding.

Oldest existing scripture of mankind, Rig Veda (10.85 mentions sacred marriage of Surya and Soma), provided the divine prototype for human weddings on which later Hindu weddings were modeled. In marriage, instead of physical union, Hinduism stressed on spiritual union, Zed pointed out.

Only reported mishap was the scuffle between some news-photographers and Brand’s personal bodyguards on October 22 and the bodyguards later apologized.

Ranthambhore National Park in south-eastern Rajasthan is amongst the finest places in the world to see wild tigers. Mughal Emperor Akbar fought a battle in the area.

BAFTA nominated Russell Edward Brand (35) of England is reportedly attracted to Hinduism; carries a Sanskrit tattoo on his body; and has made visits to a Hindu temple. His catchphrase is “Hare Krishna” and Mahatma Gandhi is reportedly one of his heroes. He was quoted as saying: "I'm into yoga, I meditate all the time, I'm vegetarian.”
