NZ film "Boy" is featured in Washington, DC

By Connie Lawn

The New Zealand Ambassador, Mike Moore, and National Geographic hosted a reception and presented the movie "Boy" to several hundred guests on Friday night (Saturday morning). The reception was wonderful, with an abundance of superb New Zealand food. It tasted even better in the fascinating setting of the National Geographic Museum.

The Washington, DC premiere of "Boy" was selected for the "All Roads Film Festival" which features films "from indigenous and underrepresented minority culture storytellers from around the world." The major guest was Taika Waititi, who directed and acted the role of the father in this film, which he shot in his home village. He introduced the film and fielded questions from the audience after the showing. I asked him whether things would turn out better if there were a sequel, and he was not optimistic in his answer.

It was a fascinating and thought provoking evening. In many ways, the problems depicted involving drugs, liquor, and violence could be taking place anywhere in the world, including on the mean streets of Washington, outside the National Geographic.
