Visit to Puckapunyal

Today Senator David Feeney, Parliamentary Secretary for Defence, and I visited Puckapunyal.

The Puckapunyal Military Area in Victoria is one of the largest training areas for soldiers in Australia. Puckapunyal is a world class facility that plays a vital role in preparing soldiers for combat, including in Afghanistan.

We were met by the Commander of the Land Warfare Development Centre, Brigadier Mark Holmes, who also commands the Puckapunyal Military Area.

We toured the Land Warfare Development Centre and discussed its role in delivering current and future Army capabilities.

The Land Warfare Development Centre is also the home of some of the Army’s best and brightest soldiers who are developing new and more effective ways of conducting military operations.

During our visit we also toured the School of Armour, the Headquarters Combined Arms Training Centre, the School of Artillery and the Road Transport Wing and spoke to soldiers undergoing trade, professional and promotion training.

Specialised skills training taught at these schools helps prepare the soldiers for current or future operations.

Parliamentary Secretary Feeney and I welcomed the opportunity to see first hand the training that Army provides for its current and future force.

We were also pleased to hear about the success of the recently concluded Exercise Emu, involving more than 1,200 Australian Army Cadets.

This annual event gives Cadets from across Victoria the opportunity to experience life in the Army.
I congratulate all those involved.
