Solomon Islands Has New Prime Minister

New Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Danny Philip

Lawmakers today have voted in veteran politician Danny Philip (MP) as the new Prime Minister.

Mr Philip 57, who heads the Reform Democratic Party of Solomon Islands defeated rival candidate, Steve Abana by 26 votes to 23 with one spoilt vote in the country’s 50 seat parliament.

People received the announcement without a repeat of violence that marred the 2006 election of Snyder Rini as Prime Minister.

Immediately after his election, Prime Minister Philip dedicated his victory to his disabled mum, supporters and people of Solomon Islands – describing it as an ultimate victory for his beloved Solomon Islands.

“This victory is for my mum, supporters, friends and people of Solomon Islands. I am prepared to take responsibility for my beloved Solomon Islands,” Prime Minister Philip said, adding he never thought of becoming a Prime Minister in his 57 years lifetime.

Prime Minister Philip is expected to announce his new cabinet in a few days, adding that his government’s policy document will be ready in 70 days.

“My government is determined for a common purpose for peace and prosperity,” he said, adding that “violence that has marred the country should now be water under the bridge

Mr Philip who is now the 9th Prime Minister of Solomon Islands hails from Lokuru village on Rendova Island in the Western Province. He has served for 16 years as MP during which he was Foreign Minister on two occasions.

Outgoing Prime Minister Dr Derek Sikua did not seek re-election, although he was re-elected as MP during the August 4 polls which were generally peaceful.
