Porirua Resident Elected to World Body
Pat Hanley of Pukerua Bay in Porirua has been elected to the Board of CIVICUS World Alliance for Citizen Participation.
CIVICUS (www.civicus.org ) has worked for over a decade to strengthen citizen action and civil society throughout the world, especially in areas where participatory democracy and citizens' freedom of association are threatened.
CIVICUS has a vision of a global community of active, engaged citizens committed to the creation of a more just and equitable world. It acts as an advocate for citizen participation as an essential component of governance and democracy worldwide. Its members include well know international organisations including World Vision, Amnesty International and Disabled Peoples International.
Mr Hanley has a long history of involvement in promoting citizen participation and currently chairs the Social & Civic Policy Institute which undertakes training and research aimed at promoting citizen participation in public policy development here in New Zealand. A major current SCPI project is directed at improving relationships between local government and communities in New Zealand.
Mr. Hanley also chairs his local Residents’ Association in Pukerua Bay and will be a candidate for the Porirua-Tawa Ward of the Greater Wellington Regional Council in the forthcoming local body elections.
