President Ramos-Horta to Give ANU Address
Dr José Ramos-Horta, President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste will give a major speech on the challenges and prospects for democracy in Timor-Leste at The Australian National University tomorrow evening.
In his first public speech in Canberra in more than two years, Dr Ramos-Horta will review the development of democratic institutions, culture and practice in Timor-Leste and the broader challenges for democracy in his country.
Dr Ramos-Horta is the second President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste since the country’s restoration of independence in 2002.
In 1996 he received a Nobel Peace Prize Peace for his efforts to bring peace and independence to East Timor. Dr Ramos-Horta has served as Prime Minister and Minster of Defence of his country, as well as Foreign Affairs Minister.
Prior to the address, President Ramos-Horta will hold a media conference in Rehearsal Room 3 at the ANU School of Music. The media conference will commence at 6.35pm. Media are asked to register their attendance in advance with Penny Cox.
