2011: Utuama Harps on Effective Security, Lauds Police
DELTA State Deputy Governor, Amos Utuama, a professor of law and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) says effective security by security agencies in Nigeria, is key to guaranteeing free and transparent polls in 2011. Nigeria's next general elections is expected to take place before May, 2011.
Already, the deputy governor has commended the Police hierarchy for being proactive towards ensuring a credible and peaceful polls come 2011.
Utuama who spoke while receiving the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of ‘C’ Department (Works), Mr Udom Ekpoudom, who was on a visit to Police formations in Zone 5 and 6 as part of preparations for the 2011 general elections, described the action of the police as timely.
AkanimoReports said on Thursday that Utuama claimed that the idea of DIGs visiting Police formations would strengthen the Police, boost confidence towards a free, fair and acceptable elections in the country, adding that Nigeria’s democracy could only be strengthen through a peaceful and free elections.
“That is very proactive in recognizing that politics is around the corner and the police needs to do more than ever before.
“With the tradition of excellence in peace keeping in times of politics, you left behind; I can assure you that this zone will be very peaceful during the time of electioneering campaign. More so as we have a governor who takes matters of security very seriously,” he said. Utuama specifically commended the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Ogbonnaya Onovo for ensuring that the Police rise up to its responsibilities and congratulated Ekpoudom on his elevation promotions from Commissioner of Police while in Delta State to the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) and currently DIG.
“He (Ekpoudom) is not a man of many words but a man of many actions. You left a tradition of excellence in this command and that tradition is subsisting,” he said.
Utuama informed that the Uduaghan administration through its three-point agenda of Peace and Security, Infrastructure and Human Capital Development was working towards the overall development of the state and uplifting the standard of living of the people. The Deputy Governor observed that Uduaghan is a man of peace who would continue to assist the Police and other security agencies to ensure that the state is not only crime free but that the 2011 elections were free to deepen Nigeria’s democracy.
Ekpoudom who was accompanied on the visit by the AIG in charge of Zone 5, Alhaji Mohamed Abubakar and the state commissioner for Police, Mr Yakubu Alkali had told the deputy governor that he was in the state as part of the IG’s initiatives for DIGs to visit Police zones to encourage them towards fighting against kidnapping and prepare their minds towards ensuring a violent-free 2011 elections.
