30,000 Doses of Typhoid Vaccines for Cyclone Affected Areas in Fiji

Suva, 25 March, 2010 – The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Pacific Office is contributing to a typhoid vaccination campaign which will be undertaken by the Ministry of Health in Fiji and the World Health Organisation (WHO) South Pacific Office.

UNICEF Pacific is procuring 30,000 doses of typhoid vaccines for the campaign in the affected areas.

Discussions regarding finalisation of the campaign are still underway between the Ministry of Health and WHO South Pacific Office.

To date, UNICEF has contributed $FJD 58,000 to assist those most affected by Cyclone Tomas.

A typhoid outbreak was already in existence prior to Cyclone Tomas. There are 114 confirmed cases of typhoid in Fiji. In unsanitary conditions and with the unavailability of clean water, the risk of life-threatening diarrhoea and infectious diseases increase dramatically.
