Darfur: TEAR Fund hopeful for end to hostilities

TEAR Fund hopeful for an end to hostilities in Darfur

TEAR Fund NZ welcomed the news that Sudan's largest opposition group has signed a peace deal with the government that could end the conflict in Darfur.

TEAR Fund executive director, Stephen Tollestrup said TEAR Fund had been helping those displaced by the humanitarian crisis since 2004 and while there had been ceasefires before, TEAR Fund was always hopeful that a peace deal could bring an end to the human misery experienced by the people of Darfur.

The preliminary documents setting out the terms of the deal signed in Qatar were believed to have offered government positions for the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM).

“This may give JEM a strong presence in the political arena, and with the forthcoming elections and the mounting international pressure, this could be just enough to make this deal work,” said Mr Tollestrup.
