Military Dictatorship And Civil Rule In Haiti: A
Chronology
On the 1st of January 1806,
following a successful slave rebellion led by Touissant
L’Ouverture, Haiti became the first independent
‘black’ republic in modern history. Since then, Haiti
has been a nation plagued by unrelenting political and
military turbulence. The instability of the Haitian
government has walloped most attempts at economic and social
reform focused on encouraging development on the small
island state. The following chronology of the political and
military volatility that has troubled the small Caribbean
francophone nation since its inception provides some sense
of how Haiti arrived at its current position.
November 18th 1803
Following an 11 year conflict against the colonizing French, the Haitian rebellion devastates the French army at the Battle of Vertières, resulting in the formation of the Republic of Haiti three years later.
