Appeal For Funds For Haiti Earthquake Survivors
RNZWCS Limited (Rotary New Zealand) has launched an appeal on behalf of the 17 Rotary clubs in Haiti within Rotary International District 7150. Haiti is regarded as one of the poorest nations in the Western Hemisphere. The earthquake, a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 M earthquake centred approximately 15 kilometres from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, struck at 4.53pm local time on Tuesday 12 January 2010. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres . This was followed by a series of aftershocks, twelve of them between magnitudes 5.0 and 5.9. The International Red Cross has stated that as many as 3 million people have been affected by the quake with as many as 100,000 deaths. The Rotary Clubs in Haiti will concentrate on providing for survivors medical expenses, purified water, food, rehousing, relocation - wherever the need is greatest. It is anticipated that Rotary Volunteers from a number of Districts from the USA will be going to Haiti.
