PIAC supports relief efforts for victims of tsunami

Manukau’s Pacific Island Advisory Committee has expressed grief and sympathy for the victims of the devastating tsunami that struck Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga. Manukau is home to one of the largest Samoan and Tongan populations in New Zealand.

The chairperson of the committee, Tupou Manapori, says the disaster has touched all Pacific peoples.

“Our prayers are with the families of those who have lost their loved ones. We are working closely with the council, communities, relief agencies and our counterparts in Waitakere, North Shore and Auckland to ensure that we provide a concerted effort towards providing immediate relief aid to the people who need it the most.

“Manukau has already set up a dedicated bank account where our people and organisations can make a contribution towards this fund. Other community-based fundraising initiatives are currently being explored.”

Donations can be made to Bank of New Zealand:
Account name “Pacific Tsunami Relief Fund”
Account number: 02 – 0191 – 0303070 – 00
Cheques to be sent to: The mayor’s office, Manukau City Council, Civic 1, 31-33 Wiri Station Road, Private Bag 76 917, Manukau 2104

At this stage, the council is not accepting any in-kind donations.
