Pro-choice activists from both coasts, and from across the middle of the country, are arriving in Nebraska Friday, August 28, in response to the announced intention of “Operation Rescue” to close the clinic of Dr. LeRoy Carhart. Dr. Carhart was a colleague of Dr. George Tiller, who was assassinated in Wichita, Kansas on May 31, 2009, after an 8 year long campaign by Operation Rescue to close down the Wichita clinic he owned for 36 years.
World Can’t Wait, an organization founded in 2005 to stop and reverse the program of the Bush administration, which included severe restrictions on abortion, has called on people to join in the largest abortion rights mobilization since Dr. Tiller’s death. Pro-choice demonstrators plan a peaceful presence, holding signs calling Dr. Carhart and Dr. Tiller “heroes for saving women’s lives.”
“Operation Rescue brought on the murder of Dr. Tiller through its relentless slander, harassment and threats to the doctor and his staff, calling him ‘Tiller the Killer’ and endangering thousands of women seeking abortion in the process. Courageous doctors who provide abortions have to endure terrible danger at the hands of a right-wing movement which has killed 9 abortion providers since 1993. We take their threat to close down Dr. Carhart as a moral challenge for everyone who cares about the humanity of women to appear publicly in his defense,” said Debra Sweet, Director of World Can’t Wait, and abortion clinic support organizer since 1986.
