US. Advocates to push for electoral reforms prior to 2010 midterms WASHINGTON (CNN) – Armed with anecdotal evidence from thousands of calls placed to voter hotlines last year, a group of voting rights advocates will lobby Congress Thursday for changes to the federal laws relating to the nation's election administration systems. http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2009/07/23/advocates-to-push-for-electoral-reforms-prior-to-2010-midterms/
Holt Praises Civil Rights Groups upon Release of Report Calling for Voter-Marked Paper Ballots and Elections Audits. http://www.house.gov/apps/list/press/nj12_holt/072309b.html
“The national percentage of voters who were denied the right to vote in 2008 was almost identical to 2000 . . . . an estimated 4 million people were barred from voting.”
The report concludes that “[e]lectronic voting systems have proven to be unreliable and insecure for the counting and recording of votes” and that “where these systems are used, elections cannot be audited or verified.”
The report's authors recommend: “ ‘[v]oter-marked paper ballot systems are necessary to ensure that votes will be properly counted . . . that the public will have confidence in the accuracy of electoral outcomes [and that] [m]andatory election audits are also critical for protecting the integrity of our elections.’ ”

Election Bills in U.S. House Continue Gaining Co-Sponsors During the last nine days, several election law bills of interest have added new co-sponsors. http://www.ballot-access.org/2009/07/22/some-election-bills-in-u-s-house-continue-gaining-co-sponsors/
Rep. Rush Holt's HR2894 would require paper ballots and hand counts of paper ballots in a minimum of 3% to 10% of precincts in federal elections. See this analysis: http://electionmathematics.org/em-audits/US/legislation/AnalysisHoltElectionAudit2009-3.pdf
PLEASE TAKE A MINUTE OF ACTION
To restore public control over elections and government, urge your US Representative http://www.house.gov/house/MemberWWW_by_State.shtml by email or by fax or phone, to:
* co-sponsor HR2894 to require states to use voter-marked paper ballots and to manually count a minimum of from 3% to 10% of randomly-selected precincts in federal elections, and
* co-sponsor HR3025 to require states to use bipartisan commissions to draw U.S. House district boundaries.
These bills will only pass with public pressure, so please act.
Thank you.
Cheers,
Kathy Dopp
