Honduras to be ringed by anti-coup protests

Honduras to be ringed by anti-coup protests

Honduras will be ringed with anti-coup demonstrators at each of its three borders tomorrow, Friday 3 July at 11:00, the ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) has announced.

The ITF’s member unions in El Salvador, Nicaragua and Guatemala will mobilise for a demonstration in each country at, respectively, El Amatillo, Los Tres Pasos de Frontera and Izabal. They will be joined by trade unionists from each country along with transport workers from Venezuela and Mexico. Other Global Union Federations, the ITUC (International Trade Union Confederation) and its regional arm TUCA (Trade Union Confederation of the Americas) have all voiced support for the actions.

ITF Inter-Americas Regional Secretary Antonio Rodriguez Fritz commented: “Our member unions in Honduras asked us to help them by organising peaceful demonstrations at border crossings in each of their neighbouring countries, and that’s exactly what we’ll be doing tomorrow.”

“Our friends within Honduras report that they are facing increasing violence, with two people killed, a thousand injured and several trade union leaders arrested. These demonstrations will give us the chance to show our support for them in the way they have decided is best.”

He concluded: “It is vital that we keep up the pressure on those who’ve tried to snatch power in the country. The culture of coups is a cancer that we hoped we had excised in Latin America. It is not something we can or will allow to return or spread to other countries.”
