N'delta Youths To Mimiko: No Room For Rhetorics
THE Central Organising Committee of the Niger Delta Youths Parliament hailed the victory of the Labour Party Governorship candidate in Ondo State, Dr. Rahman Olusegun Mimiko, at the Court of Appeal, saying the new Ondo governor must realise that the people who voted him to power will like to see how his administration performs.
Chairman of the organising committee, Mr. Imoh Okoko, who spoke with our correspondent on telephone yesterday said, ''the people of Arogbo Ijaw in Ese Odo Local Government Area of the state will like to see development taking place in their area. They have marginalised and cheated for too long. There is no time for rhetorics''.
According to him, ''the popular masses of Ondo want to see Governor Mimiko bring about change. Obviously, this means that the government should and must change the status quo ante insofar as it runs counter to established norms of good governance and democratic rule, and the overall interests of the people''.
The Niger Delta youths spokesman claimed that the Mimiko governorship was up against a formidable opposition in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which comprised mostly the anti- liberation forces, who had not taken kindly to his defection to the Labour Party. They gained in political strength for the simple reason that they have been in the corridors of power since 1999,
''The only way the Mimiko administration can stay in power peacefully is by holding the opposition at bay, staying on course to genuine democracy, and combating corruption within the state. It must try to win the hearts of the people by pursuing a pro-people policy of improving the lot of the common people who live in the villages and in the slums in towns', the group said.
