New PS For Constitutional Reform Unit

The Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet has recently appointed a new Permanent Secretary Special Duties to head the Constitutional Reform Unit.

He is Dr. Frederick Isom Rohorua.

Dr. Rohorua officially assumed duties with the Unit on Monday 16 February 2009.

He is replacing former Permanent Secretary John M. Tuhaika who has been posted to the Ministry of Provincial Government.

Dr. Rohorua has had an extensive experience working in education and managerial positions and has also undertaken training in related fields, both in-country and abroad, in countries such as Tonga, Fiji, New Zealand and Vanuatu from 1988 to 2007.

He has graduated with a Degree in the Doctor of Philosophy in Development Studies at the University of Waikato in April 2007. Dr. Rohorua said his thesis was on two broad contemporary issues in Solomon Islands; national development planning and state reform within the broad framework of development thinking and practice.

“So the opportunity to work in the Constitutional Reform Unit is closely linked with my research interest and agenda,” he said.

He added that personally, the most gratifying aspect is the opportunity to serve in the Solomon Islands Public Service, for two reasons. One, because he has never worked for the country’s public service before; and two, over the past two decades of his career he has worked at most three years in Solomon Islands.

“So the chance to serve the government and people of Solomon Islands at this juncture in my working life is especially humbling and gratifying,” he said.

Although much of his early career involved the teaching profession, he has recently assumed administrative positions, which includes being a Pacific Student Liaison Coordinator in the University of Waikato, New Zealand.

Dr. Rohorua is married with five teenage children and comes from Ulawa Island, Makira/Ulawa Province.
