Burmese Political Prisoners

Press Release: Terry Evans

14 November 2008

Another 20 Burmese political prisoners, held in Rangoon's infamous Insein Prison, have been handed down long prison sentences in a sweeping crackdown on dissent.

The activists were sentenced on Thursday to between two and 12 years in prison on charges of disturbing public order, resisting officials on duty and illegal assembly. Most are youth members of the opposition National League for Democracy party. Others belonged to the country's most defiant pro-democracy group, the 88 Generation Students.

More than 60 pro-democracy activists have been sentenced so far this week, some of them to 65 years imprisonment.
