Ministers Responsible for Public Security in the Americas

The October 2008 Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Public Security in the Americas (MISPA) in Mexico City, Mexico gathered together those responsible for public security in the Western Hemisphere for the first time. During 2 days of meetings, Ministers discussed a broad range of public security issues in an atmosphere of open dialogue and mutual cooperation. All delegations noted the importance of the meeting and the need to work together to deal with security the best way possible in every country. The declaration that was adopted at the final session opened the door for future meetings of this nature to be held the next 2 years with the option of meeting every other year after 2010. This process was initiated to address the continuing problem of public security and its growing transnational scope.

The second MISPA is set to take place in 2009 in the Dominican Republic with a prior meeting of experts to take place in Uruguay to prepare the meeting. In 2010 Trinidad and Tobago will host the third MISPA where it will be decided to continue meeting every year or change to meeting every other year.

The Public Security Ministerial is structured around a high level dialogue of Ministers, which is complemented by working groups, as necessary. Every MISPA issues a political declaration that highlights particular issues.
